Case Study: Waverley Council & Woolmer Hill Sports Association
Neoweb and Golpla Fastlay Grass Pavers

Waverley Council Engineer Keith Wilde reports:
Aspirations by the sporting community were high for an overflow grass-paver car park over a large area to cope with busy weekends.
The choice of paver tile in the industry is wide and each system promotes individual features and strengths enthusiastically.
So where do I start with a design? In the case of Woolmer Hill, a robust Local Authority solution counted highest but within a limited budget.
The Golpla Paver, by design, offers good soil capacity and strength and is of consistent high quality German manufacture.
Each cell has thin-walled dividers which will be mostly invisible in the matured surface. It isn't the cheapest, but it took our favour.
Drawing on a public works background we considered a traditional limestone base layer to take the loads but soon realised that together with the excavations the price would go way beyond budget.
Then came a very useful call to Hoofmark…
We were happy to adopt the ‘Fastlay’ system over the parking bays anyway, ie merely stripping the turf and covering the formation in a geogrid before bedding Golpla tiles on a sand bedding layer.
The innovation from Hoofmark was to employ a 100mm depth Rootstone filled Neoweb in aisle areas instead of a deeper limestone layer but achieving similar strength.
So the principal materials were sourced all through Hoofmark and the project completed very satisfactorily within budget.
