Truckpave® Case Study: Bristol Water / Costain
Truckpave Surface Grass Reinforcement
The Challenge
The challenge was to construct a Pumping Station road that was compliant to SUDs and that was maintenance free and had the ability to withstand HGV traffic.

Due to the nature and location of some of these sites the lack of future maintenance was a concern. With the choice of Truckpave, they were employing a material that has been tested by the TRL on behalf of the Highways Agency for flexibility, durability and skid resistance.
Truckpave will not crack under HGV traffic unlike some of the older concrete types.
Costain were the principal contractor who installed the Truckpave. As the product is only 12kg per paver (well under the Health & Safety legislation limit) this made installation very quick and hassle free.

As the pictures show, the site has a steep entrance and although standard Truckpave has a very good grip, the Engineers at Bristol Water choose the anti skid version that has small pimples on the surface to give additional grip.
The Truckpave has been infilled with local top soil and left to naturally vegetate. As Truckpave is made from Recycled Plastic, it is an insulator and will not soak up moisture again (unlike concrete) and so will promote better grass growth.
Bristol Water Civil Engineer reports:
‘A very environmental solution to concrete or tarmac, installed very efficiently by hand. Removable to excavate for underground problems then replace with minimum cost and waste, excellent for small accesses to pump stations.’Return to the Case Studies page…
